This morning at my house, we narrowly avoided having the whole kitchen catch on fire. Thanks to God for His protection!
The wiring above one of the ceiling lights shorted out some time after midnight and had steadily been getting hotter and hotter ever since. By the time we called the fire department, already some of the glass in the light bulb was melted, the wiring was blackened for several feet around, and the ceiling was scorched. The small space above that old ceiling was packed with dry wood chips used as insulation; they probably would have already gone up in flames if it hadn't been for the lack of oxygen in that enclosed area.
The top picture shows the kitchen ceiling after the firefighters broke it up and sprayed it to put us out of danger. The one below is the stove and counter after they were done.

Saved From Fire: the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. :D
Those pictures are really something, Jeffrey. It's a good thing you were home!
Tricia
That's certainly true, Tricia. I'm glad I went into the kitchen early in the morning and noticed the heat in the ceiling. Otherwise, it could have been much worse...
Ach, a little action with the old suction sweeper and a damp cloth, the powder will be away. Put on a press of great coffee, a few eggs and a rasher of bacon on the hob, and Bob's your Uncle.....life as normal. Oh, wait, perhaps tacking a bit of plastic sheeting to the overhead (to forestall any of those wood chips making an attempt at seasoning your brekkie) mightn't go amiss.....wowsers, what a deal, eh? Could have had the whole place in cinders easily enough. That house is old enough to have used the old style cloth and whatever "snakeskin" insulation on the wiring. Perhaps some mice had taken up residence amongst the wood chips and got carried away gnawing at the insulation....that old stuff seemed to be quite interesting to them. Good job you WERE home, and happened into the kitchen just then.
